A rectangular French wooden Tramp Art mirror from the early 20th century. This piece consists of different friezes of the same size assembled into a variety of patterns. Relief is a very important part of Tramp Art and in this case the stacked lines create 45 and 90 degree angles making for striking patterns and triangles. While the majority of the frame is brown, the trim closest to the mirror is black, making for a nice contrast. Tramp Art was an art movement popular between the 1870s and the 1940s all around the world, including France, where this mirror was produced. Tramp Art is characterized by a method of sculpting by the assembly of small pieces of wood from cigar boxes and shipping crates, and artists used simple instruments like pocketknife or razors. Despite the sometimes pedestrian perception of this art at the time, due to the fact that it could be created by people from all walks of life from farmers to miners, in reality some productions of Tramp Art reached extraordinary levels of elegance. This French wooden Tramp Art mirror, circa 1900 is in excellent condition and would make a wonderful addition to any hallway, living room or brightly lit bedroom.
