19th Century Tramp Art Box with Chip-Carved Decoration, Date and Velvet Inside

$695

A 19th century Tramp Art rectangular wooden box featuring elaborate chip-carved decoration. Each side of this box is adorned with hand-carved tiered frames of four-layered notches, characteristic of the traditional chip-carving technique of Tramp Art, a 19th century form Folk Art that transforms salvaged materials into furniture and art. The lid, attached to the base with hinges, is covered with a burgundy velvet pad bordered by a chip-carved trim centered around a carved lion head. The lid, which lifts by a ring pull, opens to reveal a velvety green storage within. The front features a carved inscription of a tiered heart flanked by the underlined date of 1873, the year this piece was created. With the great details of its carvings, enhanced by a warm patina, this American Tramp Art box from the 19th century would make a wonderful jewelry box, perhaps placed on a nightstand or on a chest of drawers, or a box for office items sitting on a desk.
