An English oil on canvas painting from the early 20th century by Colin Graeme Roe (1858 – 1910), depicting two otterhounds in a waterscape. Created in England at the Turn of the Century, this horizontal oil on canvas painting features two otterhounds hunting in the front of large rocks. Their paws in the water, two of the dogs are focused on a prey invisible to us while the third one is lifting his head up, in a gesture mimicking the rock behind him. Marked by a cloudy sky in the background, the scene is bathed in a golden light that creates great contrast. Born in Scotland in 1858, Colin Graeme Roe belonged to a family of artists including his father, siblings and uncle. The painting is signed Colin Graeme lower right (he eventually dropped the last name ‘Roe’ to distinguish himself from the rest of the family). Its great subject and skillful depiction will make this English oil on canvas painting circa 1902 an excellent addition to any home, perhaps hung above a settee, console table or enfilade. We have another Colin Graeme Roe painting that would make for a great pair, see item P 612.
