A pair of Italian 1790s Neoclassical painted and carved side chairs with shield backs and traces of gilt. This pair of Italian neoclassical side chairs from the late 18th century is quite a show stopper! Each chair has a shield-shaped back, adorned on the crest with a medallion receiving in its center a delicate carved flower topped with a swag. The back is slightly curved to accommodate the sitter more perfectly. The seat rails are adorned on the knees with the carved rosettes typical of the Louis XVI era and framed with delicate beads on the surround. The chairs are each raised on four fluted and reeded tapered legs, straight in the front and slightly splayed in the back. The ensemble is raised on small ball feet. The two sides supporting the back are adorned with acanthus leaves. With a wonderful patina showing their age beautifully, the old paint is made of a light grey / off-white perfectly complimented by traces of gilt. They have been recently reupholstered with a double welt linen fabric. These Italian chairs circa 1790 are overall absolutely perfect with their great aging throughout.
