A small pair of Italian walnut hand-carved roaring lion sculptures from the late 19th century, with dark patina. Born in Italy during the later years of the 19th century, each of this exquisite pair of sculptures features petite roaring lions, sitting in a relaxed yet alert position. Their tail neatly tucked to the side, the animals are sitting, but the subtle tension of their musculature and forward stance show that they would be ready to pounce if needed be. The careful treatment of their mane and body give a great sense of liveliness to the ensemble. With their small proportions and realist appearance, these Italian walnut lion sculptures circa 1880, will be great decorative choices for any home, perhaps placed atop an enfilade, chest-of-drawers or console table.
