English oil on canvas genre painting from the second half of the 19th century, depicting two children and a dog chasing a butterfly. This painting features a charming vision of two children accompanied by their dog, running after a white butterfly. The little boy is swinging his arm backwards as he tries to catch the butterfly with his hat. Dressed with a loose Victorian cravat, and holding a riding crop, his clothes suggest he comes from a family of certain means. The little girl is wearing a simple blue dress with yellow top and pink bonnet. The dog, oblivious to the presence of the butterfly, is running at the little boy’s side, trying to catch his crop. The blue area in the background indicates that we are somewhere on the coast. This piece exudes a charming innocence. Set inside a giltwood frame with cavetto molding, this oil on canvas painting is signed and dated (1870) lower left.
