A large oil on canvas painting of sheep in the countryside by French American artist James Desvarreux-Larpenteur from the turn of the century. This painting features a flock of sheep grazing in a forest near a small lake. The sheep are under the vigilant watchful eye of a black sheep dog in the center, while beyond, under a broken tree and holding an umbrella, stands the shepherdess. The entire scene takes place under a stormy sky and in front of a screen of trees, all within a gilded frame. James Desvarreux-Larpenteur (1847-1937) was born in the United States, but spent much of his adult life painting in Paris after studying at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts, eventually becoming a member of the Salon des Artistes Francais. A year after his son, Raymond, was born in Paris in 1876, Desvarreux began exhibiting at the Paris Salon, something he would do for the next 37 years until the outbreak of WWI in 1914. This tranquil, circa 1900 French American sheep painting is signed J Desvarreux and would make a wonderful addition to any home, perhaps in a well-lit dining room or in a living room over a refined sofa
