French Louis XVI Style Early 19th Century Narrow Giltwood Trumeau Mirror

$2,850

This French early 19th century giltwood trumeau mirror features a very slender Silhouette. The neoclassical décor in the upper section is made of two lovely volutes each adorned with a rosette and wrapping themselves around a central fire urn (a cassolette fumante in French) with delicate swag. This decor of giltwood motifs finds its place in the painted arched panel of the crest, and part of it is reprised and adapted in the lower section of the trumeau. The section below the cassolette is decorated with an egg-and-dart molding as well as rinceaux friezes. The mirror itself is made of two panels, reminding us of the difficulty of making larger glass panels in earlier times. The very Louis XVI looking reeds on each side of the mirror are decorated in their centre with intertwined ribbons. This French painted and gilded wooden trumeau mirror, circa 1820 is an embodiment of the refinement of the Louis XVI period. The decorative vocabulary, inspired by the Greco Roman antiquity, gives the piece a timeless elegance. Place it anywhere in your home to brighten up your own decor.
