This English oil on canvas painting by Edwin Frederick Holt (1830-1912) is titled The Anglers Companions. The scene, painted in 1879 and signed in the lower left, depicts two dogs in a fisherman’s boat. The composition is absolutely exquisite: in the center of the composition, a close view of the fishing boat, with two casual but alert dogs. The larger dog on the left looks prepared to get to work while the smaller dog on the right plans a day of relaxation. To the left of the dogs on the shore is a gazebo while on the right a fisherman rests on a tree stump as he prepares his fishing pole. Dressed in clothes reminiscent of Pierre-Auguste Renoir’s impressionist scenes, the fisherman is absorbed in his activity as he looks forward to catching the evening’s dinner. Set in a giltwood frame, this English painting from 1879, with its great sense of serenity mixed with a Belle-Epoque flair, would make a wonderful addition to any wall.
