English 19th Century Landscape Painting by William Widgery of Lydford Gorge

$12,000

An English oil on canvas landscape painting by William Widgery (1822–1893) from the late 19th century depicting Lydford Gorge, in carved frame. Created in England during the second half of the 19th century, this vertical landscape depicts Lydford Gorge in Devon, the deepest gorge in England’s South West with a spectacular waterfall. In 1880, Widgery built a house and studio on the edge of Lydford where he lived for 10 years. Our eye is immediately drawn to the luscious view marked in its center by an opening on the sky leading to a rustic arching bridge. Showcasing brown, green and blue tones, the painting is set inside a carved frame with scrolling motifs. With its skillful execution and earthy colors, this 19th century English landscape painting will bring a touch of undeniable elegance to any wall.
