English 1870s Oil on Board Newfoundland Dog Painting after Sir Edwin Landseer

$6,995

An English oil on board painting from the late 19th century depicting a Newfoundland dog, after Sir Edwin Henry Landseer, set in antique giltwood frame. Directly inspired by the 1831 Landseer oil on canvas painting entitled “A Distinguished Member of the Humane Society”, this oil on board painting charms us with its lovely colors and subject. The Landseer painting featured “Bob”, a dog that was found in a shipwreck off the coast of England and who became known for saving people from drowning. For this, he was made a distinguished member of the Royal Humane Society, granting him a medal and access to food. Differing from Landseer’s painting, our Newfoundland dog stands out beautifully on a golden sky suggesting a sunset. He is relaxing on a pier, his front paws leaning over the waterfront. Set inside an antique giltwood frame, this oil on board dog painting circa 1870 will enliven any wall beautifully, perhaps hung above a commode, console table or credenza.
