A pair of mid-19th century Victorian dummy boards composed of two life-size flat wooden figures, cut-out and painted in a beautiful and illusionistic manner, depicting a middle-class girl and boy in early 17th century English costumes. The boy is wearing a ruff above a green doublet, hose over cannions, and raises the arm as if about to inquire while the girl stands in a floor-length red gown over a white bodice and partlet, a coif on her head and holding a hand fan. Dummy boards are a form of house decoration that originated during the 17th century; placed in corners to surprise visitors or in front of fireplaces, most were made by professional sign-painters. These two English dummy boards circa 1860, with their graceful rendering as well as their realistic and individualized portraits, would bring an immediate charm and folk-art appeal to any traditional home.
