Carved Black Forest Walnut Mirror with Vines and Leaves, circa 1900

$2,400

A finely carved Black Forest mirror dating to the early 20th century, richly detailed with naturalistic motifs inspired by the forest. The frame takes the form of twisting vines and textured branches, evoking the organic movement of climbing plants. At the crest, a high-relief carving of grape leaves and trailing vines, creating a lively sense of depth and natural growth.

The carving throughout shows skilled craftsmanship, with careful attention to the bark-like texture on the vertical supports and subtle folate accents integrated into the lower edge. The overall effect is both decorative and sculptural, with the openwork portions at the top and sides contributing to a light, airy presence despite the substantial material.

This mirror would add warmth and character to a rustic, cabin, or chalet-style interior, or offer a textural counterpoint in a more eclectic or contemporary setting. A newer paper backing and hanging wire have been added for ease of display. Mirror glass appears original. Frame retains a deep, warm brown finish consistent with early 20th-century Black Forest work.
