Black Forest 1920s Carved Aneroid Barometer with Foliage, Bird and Fox Motifs

$2,750

A Black Forest aneroid barometer and thermometer from the first half of the 20th century, with foliage, bird and fox. This exquisite Black Forest barometer features a beautifully hand carved frame, presenting lucious foliage and branches on which a bird is perched at the top, his wings extended backwards in a lively movement. More discreet at the bottom of the piece, a fox is waiting for the bird to fall, a scene that evokes the theme of La Fontaine’s tale, ‘The Fox and the Crow’. The central section is occupied by the barometer itself, called an aneroid barometer, an instrument used for measuring pressure as a method that does not involve liquid and that was invented by French scientist Lucien Vidi in the 1840s. With its exquisitely hand carved décor and lovely patina, this Black Forest barometer circa 1920-1930 will bring a touch of authenticity to any home, particularly in a mountain cabin or country home.
